MEDIA WATCH

There are a lot of bad commercials on television. A lot. Some are simply stupid and inane like the ad for Value City. The awkward dancing and the random placement of the ads, I am like, what-in-the-...?

Like I said, those commercials were merely stupid. They, along with a Cox Cable commercial, where the 'stars' from their local ad campaign act as if they are in ice skates on ice together, insult my intelligence. Now, in the broader 'dumb' category is the female contraceptive commercials.

There are two that I have noticed but I can only call one to memory, Yaz. Not being a woman, I can't say if young women sitting toghether in a rainbow collection of ethnicities, talking about the wonder of having a period every three months, is effective audience targeting.

As crappy as they are, the 'male enhancement' commercials have a substance to them. Being that I am a part of THAT target audience, they way they walk themselves up to the mood, out doing things that mature couples do, is not overdrawn or sexualized (except I do think that the Extenze commercials make the 'better performance' aspect more clear in their ads) The female contraceptive commercials aren't like that. They remind me of the old cigarette ads, showing people playing volleyball and climbing mountains, stuff that SMOKERS aren't doing!!

Then, there are the more sinister commercials.

Exactly what is being suggested here? That we should take the meager crumbs that we can reach and shut the hell up? Same with the Liberty Mutual, 'pay it forward' ads. You better help each other with the small things in life, cause you ain't got NO CHANCE of getting more than what you have now!

State tortured Michigan on national television. I think that Coach Tom Izzo has a real hard on for the Wolverines. Even though they had a so-so record against non-conference teams, the Spartans generally play strong in the tournament. Their physical and competitive game, forces their opposition to due 'gut checks' throughout the game.

I just hope they don't have to play my SFC son's team!

I kind of like the Allstate commercials, and the Liberty Mutual ones. They focus on family, inclusiveness, and helping others. I do not find them sinister. I do agree with you on the male/female coms though :o)

As a part of the female group who is of child bearing age, I don't like those ads.

Nuvaring is the ad where women of different ethnicities sit around and discuss birth control.

I don't like to sit around and talk about vaginal issues. Just does not happen.

I saw a Yaz commercial last night and while it wasn't the one you're talking about here, it disturbed me in different ways - almost depicting that taking birth control pills is what all of the strong, independent (young) girls are doing. It was just strange ... having two young daughters I really didn't appreciate a commercial giving that message and most of all, Yaz is such a horrible product that if a woman did two seconds of simple research she would find complaints and severe side effects in users.

Come to think of it, I despise all prescription drug commercials.
